Bill Grinnell, owner and lead instructor at American Fight Club, continues one of the most distinguished legacies in all of martial arts. In the early part of the 20th century, Mitsuyo Maeda, a Judokan and Jiu Jitsu practitioner considered the greatest martial artist in the world at the time, settled down in Brazil and taught the Gracie clan his art. The most famous of Maeda's students, Grandmaster Helio Gracie continued refining Maeda's techniques and helped create the art now known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Helio won international acclaim and opened the original Gracie Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Grandmaster Gracie only awarded black belts to the most accomplished students, and only a few of the truly brilliant and most proven received the red-and-black. One of the only non-Gracies to achieve this honor was the legendary 7th degree red/black belt, Professor "Caique."

This extraordinary legacy of dedication and proven skill now extends to Caique’s esteemed protégé, Bill Grinnell. Fifteen of the world’s most highly trained black belts and seventeen schools throughout the United States comprise the Caique Jiu Jitsu network. The American Fight Club proudly continues the Caique legacy under the leadership of Mr. Bill Grinnell.

Grinnell is also the only instructor in the United States to hold a black belt in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Haganah. Grinnell received his Haganah training from Mike Lee Kanarek, co-founder of Haganah. Kanarek is a former Israeli Special Operations commando and weapons expert with black belts in multiple arts. He was named Instructor of the Year by Black Belt magazine in 2007.

Bill Grinnell has this to say:

"I believe that all of my students should first and above all else be able to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm at all times. We will not be in our best form all of our lives. We will not be healthy everyday as much as we would like to. And some of us will not be the biggest or the strongest. But with the proper training and proper mindset, we can be given the confidence to stand up against any bully, whatever form he or she may take."
